The Wedluxe Wedding Show, 2012. Hosted at The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto

January 12th, 2012

THE WEDLUXE WEDDING SHOWCASE.

Sunday, January 8th, 2012 will go down in Toronto’s history as the premier luxury boutique wedding show that set the precedent for all shows. As a proud supporter of WedLuxe Magazine, PALETTERA was honoured to be a part. It’s no surprise, but just an added celebration to Canada’s luxury wedding magazine to have directed Canada’s most stellar luxury wedding show. Since our studio’s storefont opening in 2009, WedLuxe has invited Palettera into their coveted Glitterati list of Canada’s premier wedding vendors. We have aligned values for excellence in design, elevating the cultural landscape of Canada and offering quality local products to a discerning clientele.

THE MAKING OF ICONIC STATIONERY.

For each issue of WedLuxe, we collaborate with some of the most creative people in Canada to create a runway of new ideas that disseminate into the industry as foundational trigger points. At the show this year, the influence of our work — independently as exemplary stationery designers and collaboratively as wedding professionals, was clearly seen. Our groundbreaking ideas have evolved and spread, and it is quite an honour and responsibility to continue to push the bar of excellence in Toronto, in Canada and across the world! With the resources that we have in a savvy and intelligent generation, it would be a shame to pursue anything less. Our dreams are attainable, and our art inspires the spirit — the stories of our clients told through the graphic design and handcrafted paper masterpieces. It’s not just an invitation. It’s not just a programme or menu. When our clients leave inspired, with products that inspire their family, friends and audience, it elevates the entire community.

ARTISTIC INSPIRATION.

Some noteworthy displays (truncated list) included Fuscia Designs (their fashionable table in Fuscia and Silver featuring gorgeous REAL floral pieces); Event Decorator (a stunning placecard tree that would be a great focal point at the wedding); Cynthia Martyn (her Coral and Crystal tablescape); Cake Opera Co (a super creative display in pink featuring a pig in a party hat that “ate a part of the cake” with gorgeous cake masterpieces); the Carats and Champagne vignette led by Platinum Events Group; and of course the show landmarks. These include the gorgeous entranceway, Kate Spade tea lounge and Wedluxe “master suite” by 5th Element (picture below). The most luxurious element was definitely the 4th floor with the upscale swag boutique and beauty bar, flanked by a gallery of glorious wedding gowns by Canadian designers.

Our display this year echoed the creative that we directed for Wedluxe Magazine, with a twist: SHANGHAI MEETS THE TORONTO WORKSHOP. Our team trucked down our 1905 Letterpress. The wheel was turning during the entire show, educating clients, colleagues and the little guests who were fascinated (especially little 6 year old Christopher). 800 deep red paper Gloriosas were individually cut and handcrafted, inspired by English florist Robbie Honey’s Gloriosa curtain for Hermes. A small vignette from our Old Shanghai Glam shoot sat in the corner, dimly lit by the Chinese porcelain lamp, next to all of our vintage pieces from all over Ontario, which became the living room showcase of our distinguished works from 2010 and 2011. We were so excited that you were excited about our work! It was particularly rewarding to have some of Toronto’s movers and shakers stop by our booth, taking note of the details in our work.

THE INDUSTRY.

The wedding industry as a whole is a topic for another day. Let’s just say that the range of products, services, service providers and quality of design ranges. At PALETTERA, we believe strongly in businesses that help to build the cultural landscape in tangible ways such as: educating clients in design, producing quality locally handcrafted work, investment in professional studios & real storefronts that improve the streetscapes, producing sustainable local jobs to build a strong local economy, and giving back to the community. One very important way of giving back is to strive CONSTANTLY and TIRELESSLY for excellence, so that the product is edifying AND PROCESS made meaningful.

In the case of the WedLuxe wedding show, in the many meticulous design elements like signage and marketing, to the grandeur of the show, every aspect set the bar. When one is praised, the entire community is praised, and it elevates the platform on which ideas flourish. Cheers to a HUGE milestone in the Canadian wedding industry! Congratulations to Angela, Bruce, Carolyn and the entire WedLuxe family for a wonderful achievement. Special thanks goes to Event Decorator, the Linen Closet and Michelle R. & Giselle R. Thank you also to the Jackie Gideon Beauty Bar at the Ritz-Carlton for their spectacular make-up and hair artistry! Here are PART 1 of some highlights from the show, with more to come next week! Wishing the entire industry and all our clients a flourishing and artistically inspired 2012!

Year-in-Review: Cristina & Frank, married in October 2010 at the Terrace

October 8th, 2011

Exactly a year ago, Cristina & Frank were married at the Terrace. Cristina, a PhD candidate at the time, and fiance to Frank, a corporate lawyer in Toronto, came to our studio excited with her vision for her big day: dramatic Spanish romance with an Italian twist. She and her mom both loved Valentino red: a passionate, high-style and mysterious colour that is timeless and seductive. When you pair Spanish and red together, what comes to mind right away? Spanish bullfighting and ballroom dance with the Spanish bull fighting atmosphere, The Paso Doble. Dramatic, passionate, and slightly arrogant, the dance in the ballroom of the world stage, has presented some beautiful choreography and costumes that are striking.

The art direction of Cristina & Frank’s invitations fully embraced the theme. We took inspiration from Spanish roses, vintage embroidery and costume details from both the Paso Doble and Spanish bull fights — a plethora of visually stimulating elements. On the cover of the invitation, I illustrated a custom monogram design, adorned with beautiful flourishes and a beautiful mirror-shaped border. This was then cast into a die and foil pressed into the grooves of the beautiful willow textured red stock. The double ribboning on the cover also added some dimension to the piece, bridging the lighter red tones with deeper bordeaux. The inside of the invitation featured a full colour illustration of abstracted Spanish roses, accompanied by some old serif & script typefaces. The backdrop of a yellowed buttercream and peaches help to tie together the reds and golds. This suite that we created for Cristina & Frank was one of most dramatic and theatric pieces — brings out the passionate pout and romantic story of a modern, fun, and stylish couple!

Some highlights of their relationship milestones that Cristina shared with us…
“We met at a New Year’s Eve over 10 years ago, where a group of mutual friends all attended the same gala. He proposed to me on a romantic weekend at Niagara on the lake, where he surprised me while on a private wine tour of Peller Estates by getting down
on one knee and asking me to spend the rest of my life with him. We honeymooned in San Francisco and then Hawaii (Honolulu, Kauai and Maui).” What beautiful memories they have :)

Below are photo highlights of the big day by a Frame of Mind photography, with stationery images shot in-studio by the awesome Claudia Hung.

Cristina walked down the aisle in an absolutely breath-taking Ines Di Santos gown and veil, and with a pair of Christian Louboutin‘s. The bridesmaids all wore gorgeous red Dominic Serrio Couture dresses with beautiful bouquets of red roses designed by Rosarium. Up against the vintage fencing in the Black Creek Pioneer Village, the colours really popped! The groom and groomsmen were well-dressed too! Frank was in a posh Armani Collezioni tuxedo, and his boys fitted by Panetta Menswear.

The reds were carried throughout the day, into the reception at the Terrace, where there were roses on the cake by Dessert Trends, centrepieces by Luxel and of course all the stationery by Palettera: menus, wish tree tags, table numbers and bombiniere stickers. Up against all the golds and reds, Cristina’s stunning white wedding gown truly stood out.

Family & friends were so impressed with the luxurious details of this wedding. Cristina & Frank successfully carried out a beautiful “Spanish romance”-inspired Italian wedding that will be talked about for years to come.

Happy 1st anniversary Cristina & Frank!

Thank you, we will remember you, Steve Jobs, 1955-2011

October 6th, 2011

A PERSONAL REFLECTION

Stories about Steve Jobs, whether in big feats like iphone releases or in small every day news, like market reports on 680, have always caught my attention. I never gave it much thought a few years ago, but what was for sure was my loyalty and love for Apple products. My first Powerbook G4 lasted me a good 6 years, and aided my successful completion of an undergraduate and graduate degree in design fields and first two years of work as a designer. Now on my MacBook Pro and iPhone 4, my life is highly influenced by Apple. The way I communicate is shaped by the innovator and creator of these great things, Mr. Steve Jobs.

I found out about his death yesterday late afternoon, actually via a Weddingbells’ editor’s tweet reading, “RIP Steve Jobs, I heart Apple.” Suddenly my heart felt very heavy and I ceased to be productive, just like all my friends and colleagues it seemed, as everyone paused to tweet or facebook a message of reflection or condolence. When at this scale, the offers of condolences are clearly quite deeply felt, and overwhelmingly genuine. His greatness as a designer, innovator, entrepreneur, CEO, inspiration and more, has transformed the way we work and think. I still remember his address at the Stanford Commencement in 2005 that I first heard when I entered grad school, and one part in particular, as it so adequately and succinctly captured a part of my passion:

“I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating. None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life.

But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it’s likely that no personal computer would have them. ”

He had my complete attention, because I couldn’t say it any better: typography is beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture.” And he similarly understood the idea of application of what we learn in life: that it is never a waste to learn, as you can apply it to anything you do. At the time, I had just stepped out of the urban planning & design scene and entered into a foreign and yet strangely familiar field of graphic design. It was what I believe I was destined to do, and against all logic, I had to follow what felt right with the heart. That is when I also opened my first business as a custom stationer and graphic designer, and began a challenging but meaningful journey.

So by the end of last night, all of my friend’s facebook feeds were posting perhaps the most memorable lines from his commencement address. It stuck with me all night, as I consider plans for 2012 and beyond, and the vision and direction for PALETTERA. I fell asleep thinking about it, dreamt about it and woke up with some new priorities, as there have been some projects that I planned for and never got around to just yet. I was always waiting to see when the right time was, but the only time is now.

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Steve Jobs.

Not only will these words inspire a generation, but even in his death, I believe he leaves us with much to strive for. When someone fulfils their life purpose and their outpour of passion into their work becomes so iconic, it leaves an empowering legacy. Will we all die with legacies?

Year-in-Review: Stephanie & Michael, married at King’s Riding Golf Club

October 5th, 2011

Next up on our list of featured weddings, we have Stephanie Wilson & Michael Cross, married on September 18, 2010. This couple has a cute love story.

Steph and her mom came to see me last year, super excited about the big day at King’s Riding Golf Club, King City. Stephanie, a teacher and lover of horses and horse-back riding, was delighted that she could have the best of both worlds: countryside & some city glamour. She is a down-to-earth and kind-hearted young woman, and it showed it in the way she worked with us! She mentioned that she had been with her fiancé for a very long time, and this was a day that they had been looking forward to for the longest time. Their wedding colours brought together hints of summer and fall — deep rose reds, royal purples and touches of ivory, pearl and crystals.

All I could think of when they shared their love story with us was that it really reminded me of that oh-so-very-romantic love song “Marry Me” by Train. If you haven’t heard it (impossible, really), here’s a link to the youtube video: Train’s Marry Me.

Steph and Michael were set up on a blind date when they only 15 and 16 years old! Thanks to their mutual friend, they continued to grow in their friendship and dated for a full and wonderful 10 years – that’s a decade! At that point, Michael decided that it was time! He took Steph out to a local coffee shop — the same coffee shop where they met, and as she looked up to pick from the menu, she was pleasantly surprised! “Steph, will you marry me?” written in chalk was the only item she could see and of course she said yes!

They decided to get married in the fall, and completely embrace the idea of a country golf club in autumn for their entire theme. So fittingly, all the elements were inspired by a glamourized countryside outlook, from the stationery to the florals and décor. For their stationery, we created a very classic emblem that featured a horseshoe, hydrengeas and both family names. The invitation, like a dress, was tied in the back, and untied in a gatefold to present a beautifully personalized design (you’ll have to come and see the inner portion in the studio). Short of getting into an elaborate crest, we wanted to capture the country-inspired elements and their love for horse-back riding. Steph is a teacher and Michael is a pilot, and so throughout their stationery, there are moments of spontaneity where there are symbols of apples and airplane clouds that tie their story together. Our choice and combination of rustic and whimsical fonts also gave the invitation and all the stationery a very warm character, which perfectly matched the setting of the golf club. To top it off, of course we placed two Swarovski crystals on the cover of the invitations, adorning the hydrengeas, which were hand-drawn in ink.

To the couple, the most inspiring part of the stationary design process was, “the time and thought Deb put into getting to know us and how to create/personalize our stationary.” We hope that this inspires other couples to develop a relationship with their designer and to settle…. Only for everything! This is the one time you print something so intricate and personally yours; make the most of it! For each of their tables, instead of numbers, they named them after important values in marriage: love, devotion, loyalty, friendship….. we loved this idea, as it refocuses the celebration on marriage itself. :)

One of PALETTERA’s favourite elements about this wedding was the horse and carriage to take them from the church to the reception. This was also one of the most special moments of Steph and Michael’s day! Getting into the horse and carriage, and being greeted by friends, family and pedestrians truly made them feel like Ontario royalty! Steph stepped out in her beautiful Badgley Mischka shoes and carried some beautiful flowers. Her florals and decor were designed by Kings Riding.

When asked what was their favourite moment, aside from the horse and carriage ride, the undisputed answer was the moments of Stephanie walking down the aisle and seeing all their family and friends present to share in their happiness. Their day was kept cozy, so that these VIP’s could have a great time together to share a wonderful meal and to have some hearty fun.

Congratulations and happy anniversary to Stephanie & Michael Cross!

Some words of advice from the couple to all the to-be-weds and newlyweds:
Never lose sight of the important things in life.
Live, Love & Laugh!

Year-in-Review: Valerie & Max, married in August at Château des Charmes

September 30th, 2011

To begin our collection of beautiful weddings from the past year, we present Valerie & Max.

Val & Max have a special place in our hearts, because they met with us for a consult before we even hosted our grand opening party almost two years ago. They appreciated our passion for design and actually made it out to celebrate our new beginnings as PALETTERA! Not only so, but they took the time to thoughtfully pick out their favourite 5 greeting cards at the party, in support of our scholarship fund in my mom’s honour (the first $1000 was eventually donated to the Sacred Heart Alumni Scholarship for academic excellence & leadership in 2010). A lovely pair, who always had such great etiquette and respect for people and life…. How could we ask for a better start to an awesome relationship, which turned into a friendship?

Val & Max sit and discuss their stationery while browsing through our completed projects at the PALETTERA Press for Time Launch Party. Photo courtesy of SNAP Markham Newspaper.

Val and Max met at university; they were both dating other people at the time, but had mutual friends. They reconnected when Val moved to London after school and Max was visiting the city for work. This is when they began to fall in love. As they grew in their friendship for love for one another, they were also both high achievers. Their relationship blossomed and it was time for Max to ask the most important question of his life. One wonderful Saturday spent just between the two of them followed by dinner and drinks led the way to a meaningful proposal in their cozy home.

These two are such a great fit for one another. One always listens to the other, and gives some thought before offering an opinion — this is how they lovingly interacted throughout all our consults! They are also unafraid to smile and laugh – Val’s smile can light up a room! Appreciators of wine and cheese, Val and Max decided on the beautiful Chateau des Charmes at Niagara-on-the-Lake for their wedding venue. Château des Charmes is an immaculately kept winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The region had tremendous visual substance; a perfectly cloudless blue sky canvas, a backdrop of dark green vegetation, lush grape vines heavy with fruit and in the forefront, a rose garden in full bloom. Both intimate and casual, the wedding was deliberately kept small, which helped to keep things personal. Val and Max love a combination of the outdoor picturesque scenery of the famous winery, as well as the intimate and casual charm of the tented party outside the Château.

Stationery was a key element in the wedding. Designed and art-directed at Palettera, the winery-themed stationery set the tone from the moment guests were invited. The invitations were charming and invited guests to interact with several beautiful textures: a soft fabric linen in chocolat, a straw-based tissue belliband that was sewn by hand to the wine-coloured satin sash. A custom monogram that reflected the nature of the winery and their professions was pressed in gold on the cover, like a seal on a wine bottle. It was classy, just like the people it was made for. Inside, a grapevine-inspired 3-colour letterpress design complete the Château feel. Thoughtfully, the map indicated various famous attractions for guests to explore if they arrived earlier, or wanted to stay for the entire weekend. And to honour and uplift the tradition of the Chinese tea ceremony, we created an insert to highlight this event within the event. The intimate serving of tea to the elders took place in the David Bench room. These details were carried throughout the rest of the stationery: the table numbers, placecards, seating chart and signage. It was spectacular!

In addition, Val made 2,500 biscotti and packaged them as part of the guest gifts. Known by her friends and family for her love for cooking, they have all been happy guinea pigs of her culinary experiments. She also made her deep red Venetian laced gown for the Chinese Tea Ceremony for another small personal touch.

Perhaps most importantly, the gorgeous photos of their big day was captured by the talented Krista Fox of Verve Photo Co.. Her portfolio of images for Val & Max’s wedding truly captures the story and intimate nature of the day, as well as the stylish backdrop of the famous winery.

In an effort to keep it deeply personal, decisions of the soiree were made with their guests in mind from start to finish. As the most important people in their lives, they wanted their guests to feel loved and cared for. Val and Max made their guests feel welcome and well taken care of, so that they could be blessed by the celebration of their wedding. For example, they provided custom pashminas for the ladies when night fell, flip flops for tired feet, a shuttle service to and from the winery so all guests could fully enjoy the winery’s best and also kept the ceremony short – the hearty Canadian way of hosting!! From the photos, we can relive some of their romantic moments, and witness the wonderful time that their family & friends shared.

Congratulations to Val & Max! Happy belated 1st year anniversary!

Thank you again to Krista Fox for her beautiful photographs.

Other details to note for the newly engaged who are looking for ideas:
The wedding took place at Château des Charmes with everyone preparing themselves at Riverbend Inn.

Val’s wedding gown was purchased from Pearl Bridal – off-white, silk organza, strapless; it was simple but elegant with all hand stitched rosette detail. Shoes were designed by Oscar de la Renta, with silver sequenced, pearls and tall. Another set of shoes were Emporio Armani, black velvet, tall and peep-toed. Val’s accessories were from Etsy. The tri-strand of freshwater pearls and earrings from an Antique dealer in Toronto.

The bridesmaid dresses were deep wine red, one shouldered, form fitting but elegant, with similar rosette detailing as Val’s wedding gown. Their jewellery was simple; only freshwater pearls allowed. The stationery, designed by Deborah Lau-Yu of Palettera, was organic and elegant with a splash of gold, keeping in theme with the settings and colours of the winery.

The centerpieces by Ellis Flowers were to mimic the natural setting around the winery using curly willow, orchids and bells of Ireland. The bouquets were foils of the dress colors. Willow Cakes and Pastries’ Catherine O’Donnell created the simple, local, and tasty cake. The flowers on top were from their florists and local fruit was used in order to try and tie everything into the theme.

Tony Deluca and his team were able to meet dietary needs of family and guests. They were so creative and helped identify what produce and fruit was in season to follow through with Val and Max’s vision of a local and fresh food theme. Tony also prepared a batch of cured duck prosciutto months in advance.

Happy Planning!

The weddings have been carefully selected based on the couple’s story, the wedding as a whole, and the aesthetic style of each design project. Of course, some weddings are still in the vault for editorial reasons, and for those you will have to wait until December/January’s release of Wedluxe, Weddingbells and Today’s Bride magazines.

2011: “Sneak Peaks” Part IV

August 1st, 2011

And the season continues……

Before you take a peek at what we’ve been up to in our peak season, some food for thought:
“Elegance doesn’t mean being noticed, it means being remembered.” — Giorgio Armani
A lot of clients do approach us with the desire to have something unique and outstanding. Often times, being caught up by this vision can cause a detour to choices that are so focused on how to be different, rather than what is already unique and the most precious: the client! We have turned away people whose desire to be different or over-the-top was so strong, that we believed would compromise what would otherwise be a brilliant or classy artistic direction. Nothing is more beautiful and interesting than the story {love story} that is each person’s own. Instead of being wavered by wanting to be different, it is usually more wise to focus on the narrative and also embrace the time-tested value of “less is more.” Moments of spontaneity and detail in the design are only better noticed when there are not 10 other competing elements that scream, “look at me!!”

From an art director’s perspective, we define our position in the field of design through our work: our creations are timeless pieces of art. These pieces are made to be remembered, but not because of a style that has been forced upon a client. Rather, a wonderful story will be remembered & told through a beautiful printed piece that acts as a reminder when memories grow old. Objects can contain memories, and all the details help us to find meaningfulness. This is at the core of a Palettera design.

“….thanks are the highest form of thought, and gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.” G.K. Chesterton. This was the quote we used for a thank you card design earlier this year. Everytime I think of this quote, it really puts a smile on my face. We are truly grateful for the wonderful generosity of some of our clients, who really have become friends to us throughout their event planning and invitation design process!! We really appreciate all your gestures of love and thank you for respecting and promoting our work!!! We are truly blessed to have such great clients…. this is just a sampling of some of the things that we snapped as they arrived…
